~Canal Walk~
18th December 2010
Fresh snowfall, discovered early on Saturday morning and all thoughts of travelling for a walk were abandoned. So it was a familiar, local walk from home and along the canal into Burnley. No summits today!
The White Kind of Snow
Scroll down for photos and a description of the walk....
Clockhouse Avenue, Burnley
The Highways Department seem to have a different strategy this year. Last year they wouldn't grit our avenue and we would fail on any of three tight corners, this one being the most difficult for humble 2-wheel drive vehicles. As a result loads of cars from three avenues parked on the bottom road and prevented buses from getting through. This year, they keep us gritted, we get home and the buses keep running - simples!
Reedley Drive
I walked down this unadopted road, the local residents club together to keep the cars running - or that's what used to happen when I lived here with the rest of the family. New homes are to be built on the abandoned playing fields on the left.
Prairie Fields
Local playing fields, no footy today chaps. But wouldn't it be fun, orange ball and all that.
Preston to Colne Line
Looking towards Burnley. The header photo shows the scene looking the other way.
Berries
This snow was not really forecast. On the previous evening's reports, "they" said it would miss us; "they" were wrong.
Leeds & Liverpool Canal
I'm stood on Oliver Ings Bridge and Pendle Hill is just visible, the view the other way is below:

Here ends a really fine afternoon stroll. This is Manchester Road in Burnley and before motorways and stuff, you would take this road all the way to the local metropolis.
Walkers: Just Me
Time taken: 2hr and 10 minutes over about 4 miles.
Route: From home, along Hillingdon Road, down Reedley Drive, across the Prairie Fields, along the canal to Finsley Gate, Burnley and down Manchester Road, through the shopping centre for a lift home, son collecting shoppers and me.
Weather and conditions: Bright and Sunny, no wind.
Greetings Count: A good number of walkers along the canal.
Richard's Refreshment Review: Nothing to report today.

Next I'll hire a small aircraft and trail a banner, I'll get those stats up!
